The New Standard of Safety Helmets?

The New Standard of Safety Helmets?

VIRGINIA TECH INTRODUCES NEW CONSTRUCTION HELMET RATINGS

Virginia Tech’s Helmet Lab launched a new rating system for construction helmets designed to measure how effectively they could protect against serious head injuries during falls, specifically severe but survivable events.

By replicating falls from 14 to 25 feet in controlled lab tests, researchers compared both Type I (hard hats) and Type II helmets. They found that Type II models consistently outperformed the traditional hard hats in reducing impact risks. The results showcased that when shifting to Type II helmets, it reduces concussion risk by 34% and risk of skull fracture by 65%.

WILL THIS BE THE NEW STANDARD OF HELMETS?

Virginia Tech used their own lab’s Summation of Tests for the Analysis of Risk (STAR) framework and combined data from multiple tests, to determine the performance scores for Type I and Type II helmets. Even though the rating provides valuable insights into helmet impacts, they didn’t include important factors.

All of those variables play a big factor in choosing what helmet is best for you and your job-site. While Virginia Tech’s lab information can be helpful for contractors and safety managers, it is essential to understand that this

DOES NOT REPLACE EXISTING SAFETY STANDARDS

You should always have gear that is ANSI certified and OSHA compliant, as these remain the baseline for any job site protection.

WHY BEING ANSI CERTIFIED + OSHA COMPLIANT WILL ALWAYS BE IMPORTANT

Your crew's safety is the #1 priority for any job site and you want to ensure that you have the best safety gear. To have gear that is ANSI certified and OSHA compliant means that it will protect your crew on the job and perform when it matters most.

UNDERSTANDING WHEN TO USE TYPE I OR TYPE II HELMETS

With Virginia Tech’s lab data showcasing that Type II helmets do offer the most protection, not every job site requires a Type II helmet (yet).

Not all safety helmets protect the same way and understanding the difference between Type I and Type II helmets is essential. You want to be able to equip your team with the best and safest gear for the job.

WHY SAFETY MANAGERS PREFER DEFENDER HELMETS

If you haven’t upgraded your crew to Defender safety helmets yet, now is the time. Designed for maximum protection some key features of our Type I and Type II helmets are:
